Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones to deliver her first State of the City address

The mayor is expected to tackle major issues including economic growth, housing and controversial local projects.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio’s mayor is set to take the stage for a major milestone.

Gina Ortiz Jones will deliver her first State of the City address Tuesday, nearly 10 months after taking office, speaking before the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

City leaders say the address will focus on key priorities like economic development and the city budget, but it’s also expected to touch on several high-profile and sometimes controversial topics.

Among them: Project Marvel, the Ready to Work program and the proposed ICE detention facility on the city’s east side.

The mayor has recently taken action on several fronts, including releasing plans aimed at expanding housing for vulnerable residents and increasing access to childcare and early education.

She has also navigated challenges involving both state and federal issues, from local projects like rainbow sidewalks to efforts to secure funding for a new VA facility.

One of the most closely watched topics is the proposed ICE processing center. In a recent letter, Ortiz Jones urged the Department of Homeland Security to reconsider plans to convert a warehouse into a detention facility, citing concerns over transparency and community impact.

There could also be updates on Project Marvel, as well as ongoing discussions involving the San Antonio Spurs and a reported financial dispute tied to a failed Major League Soccer deal.

The State of the City address begins at noon, with updates expected throughout the day.
