Nationwide Canvas outage hits UTSA prompting finals delay, university says

Students are encouraged to check UTSA News for assignment guidance and updates.

SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas – San Antonio announced Thursday afternoon that Canvas was down university-wide as part of a broader nationwide outage impacting colleges across the country.

Officials said students and staff should avoid using the system until further notice. UTSA teams were monitoring the situation and were working on a solution.

Due to the ongoing outage, finals scheduled through Friday are being rescheduled. Students are encouraged to check UTSA News for assignment guidance and updates.

“This unexpected service disruption will not negatively impact students’ final assignments or grades. We intend to communicate a revised schedule for assignments and exams as soon as possible and will share an update on Friday. Further, for those who are graduating next week, commencement ceremonies will proceed as planned,” university officials said.

Officials said faculty members that had exams scheduled for Thursday and Friday will receive more information from their colleges and academic leaders about rescheduling and how to move forward in the coming days. Students and faculty with coursework planned after Friday are being asked to closely monitor their university email for additional updates.

By late Thursday night, Instructure, the company that runs Canvas learning management system, said most users should be able to access the app.
