One year later, woman still searches for cat lost in Hill Country flood

As Kerrville remembers animals lost in the July flood, one family continues to hold onto hope.

KERRVILLE, Texas — Nearly a year after devastating Fourth of July flooding swept through the Hill Country, Cindy McCartney still looks for her beloved cat, Charlie Girl.

The feline disappeared when floodwaters tore through McCartney’s home in Bumblebee Estates in Ingram on July 4, 2025. While many families lost homes, belongings and loved ones, countless pets were also separated from the people who loved them.

For McCartney, the search never ended.

She says she still looks for Charlie Girl every day, hoping for a miracle.

Stories like hers are why Kerrville Pets Alive! is hosting a remembrance ceremony to honor the animals lost during the historic flood.

“We had hundreds of pets, livestock and even pet turtles reported missing during the flood,” said Executive Director Karen Guerriero. “This was a tragic event for so many families and also for those who lost beloved animal companions.”

The ceremony will take place July 3 at 7:30 p.m. at 2102 Memorial Blvd. in Kerrville. Pet owners who lost animals, along with community members wishing to pay tribute, are invited to attend. Leashed pets are welcome.

For some families, the evening will be a chance to remember. For others, like McCartney, it will also be a chance to keep hoping.

Because until Charlie Girl comes home, her story isn’t over.
