SAN ANTONIO — As Spurs fever continues across San Antonio, state officials are preparing for another major sporting event right around the corner.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says people may notice more DPS troopers than usual this summer, especially as the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway.
While San Antonio is not hosting any World Cup matches, the city is expected to see increased visitor traffic, watch parties and travelers passing through the area. That’s why DPS is launching what it calls “Operation Safe Summer.”
According to DPS, troopers will work alongside local law enforcement agencies to increase visibility in areas expected to see larger crowds and higher visitor traffic. That includes stadiums, entertainment districts, concert venues and downtown areas.
Houston and the Dallas area are among the Texas cities hosting World Cup matches, but DPS says San Antonio and Austin will also receive increased patrols as part of the operation.

When it comes to Spurs games, including tonight’s NBA Finals matchup, local law enforcement agencies have already added extra patrols, with support from the FBI as well.
Officials say the increased presence is intended to help ensure public safety as large crowds gather for major sporting events and related celebrations.
