Officers who were responding to a call for a welfare check after 9 a.m. Monday found the victim with a stab wound in his chest near the corner of N. Zarzamora and W. Poplar streets.

Paramedics attempted to revive him, but the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, died at the scene, according to police.

Ramiro Correa, who has lived in the area for years, immediately noticed the patrol cars and crime scene tape.

“I just passed by to go eat some breakfast, and all of a sudden, I knew that had to be a homicide,” he said.

Correa said he was not exactly surprised to learn about the deadly trouble.

He says, sadly, crime in the area seems to be increasing lately.

Police believe the victim was stabbed where they found him, at the bus stop, possibly in daylight hours. That would suggest a brazen attack.

“When it comes to money, drugs and that, they don’t care who’s out there — daytime, nighttime,” Correa said.

Officers searched the area, looking both for clues and the killer. They ended up detaining two men nearby. However, they were not immediately sure if they were suspects in the case.

Correa said he doesn’t feel safe anymore in the neighborhood he has called home for years.

“Everybody’s carrying a gun. Everybody’s shooting everybody. This was just a stab. It could be anything,” he said.

As of early Monday afternoon, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office was still working to identify the man who was killed.
