Police say speed caused an 18-wheeler trailer to overturn near the Finesilver Curve early Thursday, spilling oil and triggering a hazmat response.
SAN ANTONIO — An overnight 18-wheeler rollover prompted a hazmat response near downtown San Antonio early Thursday morning after police say speed contributed to the crash.
The accident happened around 2:39 a.m. on the southbound Interstate 35 ramp to westbound Interstate 10 near the Finesilver Curve.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, a 64-year-old driver hauling a trailer failed to maintain a single lane due to speed. Investigators say the trailer collided with a second vehicle driven by a 31-year-old man, causing the trailer to tip over.
The rollover spilled oil onto the roadway, prompting a response from hazmat crews to contain and clean up the mess.
Emergency radio traffic initially reported a tanker truck had overturned, leading to concerns about the spill and traffic impacts near one of the city’s busiest highway interchanges.
Police say minor injuries were reported, but none were considered life-threatening.
Traffic was affected for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and remove the overturned trailer.
The investigation remains ongoing.
