Teen shoots at vehicle with baby inside while suffering mental health episode, police say

Police said the 16-year-old boy appeared to have schizophrenia. Distant relatives were inside the truck that he targeted.

SAN ANTONIO — A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after San Antonio Police said he shot at a vehicle with a baby inside. Police believe he was suffering from a mental health episode.

This happened around 2 p.m. on Lee Hall Street near Blanco Road. No one was injured in the shooting.

A witness said they heard police negotiating with the teenager to come out of a home for about 30 minutes.

“I heard them say, put your weapons down, put your weapons down, come out, come out, put your hands up,” Ester said. “And when he came out, he came out, walking backwards with his hands up.”

Police said the teenager appeared to have schizophrenia. They said he fired one or two shots at the truck, which belongs to a distant relative.

“I mean what if he would’ve hit the baby, I mean that’s something you can’t take back,” Ester said. “You can’t change it, once you do something like that, you can’t come back from that.”

The witness was visiting her daughter who lives down the street from the shooting. She said she believes police did a good job deescalating a dangerous situation.

“He’s so young, he’s going to have to live with that but right now he can get help if he has mental issues,” Ester said.

Police have not said what charges, if any, the teenager will face.
