Texas DPS: Suspected human smuggling attempt leads to high-speed chase and arrest in Maverick County

A suspected human smuggling attempt in South Texas led to a high-speed chase and the arrest of a driver, according to Texas DPS.

MAVERICK COUNTY, Texas — A suspected human smuggling attempt led to a high-speed chase in South Texas earlier this week, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

New video released by DPS shows troopers stopping a white Jeep Cherokee on U.S. 277 in Maverick County on Monday. As troopers approached the SUV, investigators say several passengers jumped out. The driver then sped away, prompting a pursuit.

DPS says during the chase, additional passengers leapt from the moving vehicle and ran into nearby brush.

Troopers pursued the group on foot and ultimately arrested the driver, identified as Shyloh Rodriguez of Crystal City.

Four migrants were also apprehended and turned over to U.S. Border Patrol custody, DPS said.

Officials say the case underscores what they describe as increasingly dangerous tactics used by human smugglers along the border as part of Operation Lone Star.
