Tip from the public leads to major break in human smuggling case, authorities say

A public tip led authorities to a human smuggling case in Zavala County, resulting in three arrests and the discovery of hidden migrants, officials report.

SAN ANTONIO — A tip from the public led to a major break in a human smuggling case in Zavala County, authorities said. Officials say migrants were found hidden inside a house, which led to three arrests.

Law enforcement from several agencies reportedly worked together on the case. Zavala County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS and U.S. Border Patrol were able to conduct a search on a home on Old Uvalde Highway in Crystal City.

During the search, authorities were able to locate two migrants hiding in an upstairs bedroom. Officials say they were undocumented. They have been turned over to Border Patrol.

Three people, Nichole Navar, Christina Benavides and Reymundo Lopez, Junior, were all taken into custody. They face felony charges of operation of a stash house and engaging in criminal activity.

This is an ongoing investigation.
