USPS highlights San Antonio’s rising mail theft amid ‘Mailbox Improvement Week’

According to San Antonio police data, officers documented 2,031 mail theft cases in 2024.

SAN ANTONIO — If you’ve ever had a package stolen or discovered missing mail, the U.S. Postal Service says you’re not alone.

The USPS is recognizing “Mailbox Improvement Week” as mail thefts and damaged mailbox clusters continue to impact customers across the San Antonio area.

According to San Antonio police data, officers documented 2,031 mail theft cases in 2024. That number slightly decreased to 1,949 last year. So far this year, authorities report nearly 350 mail thefts across the city.

Residents have frequently reported thieves breaking into community mail clusters and stealing sensitive documents, while porch pirates continue targeting packages left outside homes and apartments.

USPS officials said damaged mailboxes and broken delivery areas can create major inconveniences for customers, especially those living in apartment complexes. When carriers cannot safely deliver mail, customers are often forced to pick it up at the post office.

“We want to deliver safely. But when we can’t do that, we do have to bring it back to the post office and that causes our customers to have to come to the post office, wait in line and get their mail,” said Becky Hernandez, a USPS communications specialist. “So we’ve really tried to work with the department managers, like we mentioned, with homeowners associations to get those repaired as quickly as possible so we can resume delivery.”

USPS encourages customers to check their mail regularly and retrieve packages as soon as possible to help prevent theft.

Anyone who suspects mail theft is encouraged to contact local police or the Postal Inspection Service.
