1 person dead, another in custody after head-on crash in New Braunfels

New Braunfels, Texas – One person is dead, two people are seriously hurt and a third is in police custody following a head-on vehicle crash in New Braunfels early Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of FM 306, near the intersection with Hunter Road.

According to police, officers arrived to find two Dodge Ram pickup trucks having collided head-on — a white Dodge Ram that was traveling north on FM 306 and a black Dodge Ram that was traveling south on FM 306.

Police said the driver of the white truck, 41-year-old Reva Garza of New Braunfels, suffered critical injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two male passengers, 19 and 25, were both taken to nearby hospitals in critical condition. At last check, they are presently stable.

Authorities say the driver of the other truck, Juan Sebastian Vargas, 21, is charged with one count of intoxication assault with a vehicle, causing serious bodily injury. He was taken by ambulance to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital New Braunfels and was medically-cleared following the crash.

Vargas is now in Comal County Jail as additional charges may be pending, police said.

The NBPD Traffic Unit closed that section of FM 306 for approximately four hours while they worked and cleared debris.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
