Hit by a car and overlooked for months, Bush is still waiting for someone to choose him | Forgotten Friends

The quirky 8-month-old pup has a permanent limp, a heart full of love and plenty of toys to share.

SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

Bush has already survived more than most dogs his age ever should.

The 8-month-old mixed-breed pup was found lying outside a fast food restaurant after being hit by a car. Injured and alone, he was brought to City of San Antonio Animal Care Services on December 2, 2025.

Five months later, he’s still waiting.

Bush is now one of the shelter’s longest-stay dogs — and staff members say shelter life is no place for a puppy this sweet.

The crash left Bush with a permanent limp, but you’d never know it from the way he plays. He zooms around with toys, leans into pets and happily hangs out with other dogs. He even gets along with cats.

“He doesn’t let it slow him down,” shelter staff say.

Bush can be a little shy at first and may need a few extra seconds to warm up to new people, but once he does, his goofy personality shines through.

He loves treats. Loves affection. Loves having dog friends. And despite everything he’s been through, he still trusts people enough to lean in for love.

Staff say Bush would do best in a home with teens or older children and a family willing to give him the patience and comfort he’s been missing.

He’s healthy, vaccinated and will be neutered once adopted.

What Bush really needs now isn’t another day in a kennel.

It’s a couch. A toy basket. A person who sees past the limp and notices the resilient, quirky puppy underneath.

Because after five months of waiting, Bush deserves more than survival.

He deserves home.

Right now may be the perfect time to meet him. Through May 17, the shelter is participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event with reduced adoption fees. And during the Spurs playoff run, adoption fees are waived completely the day after a Spurs win.

Anyone interested in adopting Bush or another pet can visit ACS at 4710 State Highway 151. Shelter hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The shelter also says it’s always in need of donations like unopened pet food, treats and chews.

Visit ACS in person to meet Bush and all of their available pets and to fill out an application for adoption. Email ACS at ACSadoptions@sanantonio.gov.

For whoever adopts Bush, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

Or maybe Bush is not the right fit for your home, but you are looking to adopt or foster an animal. You can get started by meeting some of their pets (online that is!) via their new enhanced pet search which can be found on their website.

ADOPTION EVENTS

ACS will be having several adoption events coming up throughout San Antonio in the future. To find out when and where, check out the events on their Facebook Page to learn more!

VOLUNTEER

If you have some extra time, ACS could always use some extra hands to help care for the animals. They are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help them:

  • provide exceptional care to the pets in our care.
  • serve our community.

Volunteers must be able to commit to at least six hours a month for at least three months. “Your consistent involvement is crucial, as our volunteers play a vital role in supporting our staff and helping pets find their forever homes,” said ACS.

If you’re interested in becoming an ACS volunteer, start by applying:

DONATE

You can also support the work they are doing by making a monetary donation. CLICK HERE

Checks may also be made payable to “City of San Antonio Animal Care Services” or cash can be dropped off at or mailed to:

If you have extra items, you can help other pet owners who may be struggling through their partnership with Daisy Cares. ACS is a drop off point for Daisy Cares which always needs donations of pet food for both dogs and cats, as well as things like newspapers, blankets, treats and toys.

ACS currently needs more items to help promote their pets for adoption, including large pet bandanas. The pet networking wish list can be found here. Pet chews to help the dogs in their care would also be appreciated.

You can check out their Amazon Wish List for the exact items needed right now. Or check out the ACS Bottle Baby Warriors Wish List for items needed to help care for all of the puppies and kittens. Last but not least there is a SAACS Foster Amazon Wish List to help the folks who are fostering animals from ACS.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
