Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is expected to address concerns as debate continues over access to housing for veterans.
SAN ANTONIO — The debate over housing access for veterans is back in the spotlight at San Antonio City Hall.
Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is expected to speak Wednesday morning on a proposal aimed at preventing landlords from denying veterans who use housing vouchers.
The discussion follows a divided meeting last week, where veterans, property managers and advocates shared sharply different views on how to address the issue.
Some council members are now reconsidering a plan that would prohibit landlords from rejecting applicants based solely on voucher use.
Property managers argue delays in voucher payments could create challenges and potentially reduce the number of available units.
Veterans and housing advocates, however, say stronger protections are needed to prevent homelessness and ensure those who served have access to stable housing.
An alternative proposal introduced by District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo would offer incentives to landlords, including $500 payments to help offset costs when renting to voucher holders.
City leaders say most veterans in San Antonio and Bexar County are able to find housing with vouchers, but acknowledge more needs to be done for those still struggling.
The mayor is scheduled to speak alongside veteran leaders at 8:15 a.m. outside City Hall, ahead of a council meeting where the issue could see further discussion.
