Kevonte Lamont McConnell-Hawkins, 33, pleaded guilty to the death of 30-year-old Georgetown resident Colter Davis-Nelson.
GEORGETOWN, Texas — A San Antonio man has been sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with the 2023 death of a Georgetown man.
Kevonte Lamont McConnell-Hawkins, 33, pleaded guilty to manslaughter last week more than two years after 30-year-old Georgetown resident Colter Davis-Nelson was killed in a collision.
According to the Williamson County District Attorney’s Office, the deadly crash happened at around 5 a.m. on Dec. 1, 2023, on the Interstate 35 south frontage road in Georgetown. Evidence showed McConnell-Hawkins drove a large pickup truck at 94 mph in a 45 mph zone when he collided into Davis-Nelson.
As a result of the crash, Davis-Nelson was thrown roughly 300 feet and died at the scene. The Williamson County District Attorney’s office said McConnell-Hawkins alerted authorities and stayed on site after the collision.
Investigators said McConnell-Hawkins’ windows and windshield were tinted illegally, making it harder for him to see. He was also cited for speeding and having an illegal window tint in the same area as the deadly crash just several months before Davis-Nelson’s death.
“Driving at double the speed limit through a construction zone with zero-visibility window tint is not simply a lapse in judgment — it is extreme recklessness,” Williamson County DA Shawn Dick said in a statement. “We hope this sentence sends a clear message that such flagrant endangerment of our community will have serious legal consequences.”
Involvement in 2023 Austin street takeover
Prior to this incident, court documents state that McConnell-Hawkins was previously involved in a 2023 Austin “street takeover,” a situation that typically involves dangerous driving activities like drifting maneuvers and doughnuts.
The documents state that this particular takeover happened between 6 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2023, and 1 am. on Feb. 19, 2023, across busy Austin intersections, resulting in more than 400 calls to law enforcement.
“As this event transpired, multiple crashes occurred, pedestrians were struck by vehicles, property was damaged including multiple police vehicles, multiple persons were engulfed in flames and set ablaze, several vehicles evaded law enforcement’s attempts to conduct traffic stops and at least one police officer was injured due to hostile crowds,” the affidavit said.
Callers stated that takeover participants set off fireworks and blocked a portion of Metric Boulevard and West Braker Lane during the incident.
A further review of several videos allegedly showed a gray Infiniti doing doughnuts and a ring of flames in an intersection. The affidavit said the driver of the Infiniti drove backwards and hit the front of a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
The pickup truck allegedly drove forward and pushed the Infinity away from the intersection before the Infiniti driver left their vehicle. The Silverado driver then did several doughnuts in the intersection while driving twice into the flames, according to the documents.
Flames began to spread quicker, and other videos show the Silverado “causing a large fireball,” prompting several people’s clothes to catch fire and simultaneously blocking traffic.
Following the incident, an Austin Police Department (APD) detective matched the Chevrolet’s registration to McConnell-Hawkins.
Court documents state McConnell-Hawkins committed deadly conduct, which is a Class A Misdemeanor.
