San Antonio to give update on Project Marvel and proposed Spurs arena

City leaders are expected to take key steps in planning a new downtown sports and entertainment district.

SAN ANTONIO — As the San Antonio Spurs chase another championship, the City of San Antonio is making moves that could shape the team’s future off the court.

City leaders are set to provide an update Wednesday on “Project Marvel,” a massive proposed downtown sports and entertainment district that includes a new Spurs arena.

The plan, which hasn’t seen a major public update since January, is still in the study and assessment phase — but several key decisions are now on the table.

Among them: finalizing the hiring of an executive project manager to oversee the multi-year effort. That role would help guide major developments tied to the project, including upgrades to the Alamodome, the Henry B. González Convention Center and the transformation of the old federal courthouse into a new venue.

City council is also expected to consider approving additional studies tied to the project’s next phase.

Looking ahead, officials say they aim to acquire the Institute of Texan Cultures property by the end of the year — the proposed site for the new arena — along with nearby federal properties later this summer.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday at City Council Chambers.

For now, the vision is still taking shape — but the stakes are high as San Antonio looks to build a future that matches its basketball legacy.
