SAN ANTONIO — What began as a celebratory night for fans of the San Antonio Spurs ended in frustration for several attendees after a string of car vandalism incidents was reported in a parking lot outside the Frost Bank Center.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating multiple reports of vehicles with broken windows following Tuesday night’s game.
The sheriff’s office says at approximately 11:45 PM, three vehicles sustained damage in parking lot 9. All three vehicles did not appear to have anything taken from the inside. They go on to say, it appears there were elements for criminal mischief and not vehicle burglaries.
Fans leaving the arena discovered the damage after returning to their cars. Samantha Hernandez, one of the victims, described the experience as unsettling.
“It’s just crazy, it’s so scary, and there’s so much going on while you’re at the game,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez said she and her husband only realized their vehicle had been damaged when they returned to place items in the trunk.
“The only reason that I found out was because my husband opened the trunk … and he noticed that our back window was broken,” she said.
According to Hernandez, at least four other vehicles in the same area were also vandalized. She said some cars appeared to have signs of attempted forced entry, even if windows were not fully broken.
“There was some forced entry on the passenger window … you can tell they tried to force themselves to get into the car,” Hernandez said. She added that one driver left the scene rather than wait for deputies to respond.
Hernandez said a representative from the arena spoke with her after the incident, but she has not received any follow-up.
In a statement, Spurs Sports & Entertainment said it is aware of the incident and is cooperating with investigators.
“We are aware of the incident that occurred last night and are working closely with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office as they continue their investigation,” the statement read. “Deputies were already onsite and responded quickly. The safety of our guests is always a priority, and we appreciate our ongoing partnership with local law enforcement.”
Hernandez said she hopes to see increased security measures moving forward.
“We pay for parking, we pay for everything,” she said. “They just need more security.”
Authorities have not said whether any suspects have been identified.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says there were no witnesses, and we are asking the public for any information to please contact the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at 210-335-6000 or bcsotips@bexar.org.
