‘The gas prices are absurd’: Texas gas prices top $4 for first time since 2022

At a Valero gas station off Wurzbach and Lockhill Selma, regular unleaded was selling for $4.39 a gallon Thursday, among the highest prices in the city.

SAN ANTONIO — For the first time in almost four years, the average price for a gallon of gas in Texas has climbed just above four dollars, according to AAA Texas.

The statewide average for regular unleaded now sits at $4.09 per gallon, up 24 cents from last week and $1.32 higher than this time last year. AAA says the statewide average is now 48% higher than it was on this day in 2025. Drivers across the country are paying an average of $4.56 per gallon.

In San Antonio, drivers are now paying an average of $4.13 per gallon, compared to $3.85 just one week ago.

For San Antonio’s Aubrena Reed, the rising costs are becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

“I do a lot of moving around with three grandkids, three different school districts,” Reed said.

The higher prices are already changing her family’s travel plans.

“We’re not going out of town in my car anytime soon,” Reed said. “If we’re going to do anything, we’re going to be on a bus, a shuttle, a train, or a plane.”

Jonathan Solis isn’t thrilled either when he visits gas stations these days.

“I gotta travel to work maybe a city or two away every day,” Solis said. “It’s outrageous, the gas prices are absurd.”

Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas pointed to elevated crude oil prices as the biggest factor behind the surge at the pump.

“We continue to see crude oil prices remain at least above 90 dollars a barrel. They were above a hundred dollars a barrel earlier this week,” Armbruster said. “Elevated crude oil prices remain the main driver behind the higher prices Texas drivers are seeing at the pump. “Ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to influence the global oil market.”

Armbruster noted increased seasonal demand is also contributing to the climb as warmer weather and the approaching Memorial Day holiday bring more drivers onto the roads.

“At the same time, warmer weather brings more people onto the roads, which typically increases fuel demand this time of year,” Armbruster said.

Some retailers, including Circle K, are offering fuel discounts and rewards programs to help customers offset the rising costs. AAA also recommends avoiding aggressive acceleration and keeping vehicles properly maintained, especially tires, to improve fuel efficiency and save money.
