Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar uninjured in car crash; elderly passenger hospitalized as ‘precaution’

He said he was leaving the Bexar County jail when the accident occurred.

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar was involved in a vehicle crash Saturday morning but says he is “fine.”

Salazar posted on Facebook about the incident involving his county vehicle. Later Saturday night, during a news conference addressing an unrelated case, he talked about the crash.

He said he was leaving the jail after tending to a “personnel matter” and was on access road Pecos La Trinidad when he says he believed a vehicle ran a red light, causing him to T-bone the other car.

The sheriff stated that his air bags did not deploy but the other vehicle’s did. He said an elderly woman, who was a passenger in the other car, was taken to the hospital as a precaution for chest pain.

Salazar said traffic deputies responded to the incident. He noted that the vehicle is insured by the county and was taken to a body shop but is not believed to be a total loss. He was thankful for the outpouring of support after news of the crash spread.

‘I’m happy the community has been wishing me well and giving us a call and letting us know that they were thinking about us,” Salazar said.

No other information about the crash was provided.
